OLIVIA GORRA was born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz and has recently had a street named for her in the port city of Veracruz. She has been distinguished by the Mexican Critics’ Union for Music and Theater as Mexico’s most important soprano and her name has been inscribed in the Hall of Fame of Mexico City’s National Actors’ Association and the National Council for Professional Entertainers. She debuted as Liù in TURANDOT at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and was First Prize Winner in the TRAVIATA 2000 International Vocal Competition, chosen by Lorin Maazel and Licia Albanese. She has been recipient of the Mozart Medal of Honor given by the Austrian Embassy in Mexico City and the Medal of Honor awarded by the Festival Alfonso Ortiz Tirado in Sonora in addition to having been given the keys to the City of Sacramento, California. Olivia Gorra was chosen as finalist in the ROLEX Mentor and Protegé Arts Initiative and participated in special master classes with Jessye Norman at the Académie de Villecroze in Provence and has appeared as singer and actress in Carla Estrada’s popular television series, PASIÓN.Olivia Gorra is creator and producer of the spectacular multidisciplinary Mexican stage work CHAMÁNIKA with the special assistance of Emilio Carballido and a select group of archaeologists and ethnomusicologists along with composers Dimitri Dudín and James Demster, featured in various international festivals.
Presently continuing studies at the SET School of Cinema in Mexico City, Olivia Gorra began her musical studies at the School for Artistic Values, A.C. in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, proceeding to the Superior School of Music (National Institute of Fine Arts) in Mexico City. In New York City she completed studies at The Manhattan School of Music and the Barnard College of Languages.
